“The former site of the Starbucks coffee shop on southeast corner of Sycamore and Third streets was a popular destination for the faculty and staff of St. Mary Church and school. It was the source, for many, for that first cup of coffee in the morning. Many neighborhood old timers, however, refused to set foot in the coffee shop because of what they felt was shoddy treatment accorded the previous occupant, Isaly’s Deli. Isaly’s Deli replaced a pharmacy owned and operated by Valeria Albert. Valeria was in the fourth class to graduate from St. Mary High School in 1921. There were five graduates that year, four young ladies and Carl Seipel. At that time the pastor, Father Wehrle encouraged the young lady graduates to seek employment with the federal government in Washington, D. C. Valeria, however, had other plans and attended and graduated from the Ohio State University School of Pharmacy. On graduation, her father helped her purchase the pharmacy that was located on the corner of Third and Sycamore (Klein’s), thus she became the first female owner and operator of a pharmacy in the state of Ohio. In the mid 1940’s, Thurmania Theater, located at the northeast corner of Jaeger and Thurman Avenues, closed and Valeria relocated her pharmacy to the building.” - by Ed Quickert
